Double Feature: Ocean's Eleven/Ocean's Twelve

  • Mood: Sneaky
  • Smilie:
  • Word: Thief!

This is a slightly different take on the Double Feature Review. Ocean's Eleven starring George Clooney is actually a remake of the film Ocean's 11 with Frank Sinatra, which I finally saw the other day to get into the Ocean's Twelve mood. So, to reflect this, I will be smooshing all three into one review.

Enjoy!

 Ocean's Eleven (11)/Ocean's Twelve (1960, 2001, 2004)

The Story Thus Far:

The most lucrative job for any thief is knocking over a casino. Or, in Danny Ocean's (Frank Sinatra, George Clooney) case, several casino's at once. Of course, it requires more than one person to pull off the perfect job, so Danny recruits (ten of the best hired professionals, or his old airborne regiment, depending on the version you watch) to help him out. Three casinos, one safe/five casinos, five safes in one night with a payoff that will make Ocean's Eleven the richest, and most successful bank thieves in all of history makes for an interesting, agonizing, and definitely hilarious endeavour to undertake. The plan goes on without a hitch, and the ingenuity behind it is pure genius. However, again, depending on which version you watch, they either get away with it, or they don't.

Assuming that they do get away with it, we fast-forward a few years. After being ratted out, Danny Ocean and his crew are forced to pull off another incredible heist in order to pay off the money they stole from Tony Benedict (Andy Garcia), or they lose their lives. To make things interesting, it's Danny's wife Tess (Julia Roberts) to the rescue when things go from bad to worse for the Ocean's Eleven, once more proving that behind every successful thief, is a successful woman

Likes/Dislikes:

I have to say that I enjoyed the original Ocean's 11 better than the remake. It was classier and the writing was sharper. Much of the wit was quite subtle and was easily missed if you weren't paying attention. Not to mention that Sinatra's five casinos, five safes is much more impressive than George Clooney's three hotels, one safe scenario.

But George Clooney and his crew did an admirable job in redoing this movie and it was interesting to see how the high-tech 20th Century twist added much more intrigue to the plot, as more equipment usually means more things that can go wrong.

At the same time, though, the simplicity of the original gave it that much more nervous anticipation.

Ocean's Twelve was an all right movie. It had some good lines in it and they were able to make the script feel fresh, but not by much. I mean, how many ways can you really make a movie with a large-scale robbery as the central focus? And some of the camera work was a little motion sickness inducing.

Of course, you have to love the little real-person-look-alike ploy they play during the course of events, which was good for a few laughs.

In Closing:

I would highly recommend the original Ocean's 11 over the remake, but see them both, since they each have their benefits; great chemistry and the joy of watching the 'Rat Pack' come together with original writing and amazing timing, and seeing a group of highly skilled actors imitate those that have come before with great aplomb and admirable impersonation.

Ocean's Twelve seemed a little goofy when compared to Ocean's Eleven, but it was a good movie that had a similar pacing to the Sinatra version of Eleven, which made it a little slow, but it paid off in the long run.
